Our History
Our funeral home has a long rich history dating back to its inception in 1948.
After being employed at various funeral homes in Texas and Pennsylvania, Mr. McCarty returned home to Hughesville to open, what was originally known as, the Gordon D. McCarty Funeral Home.
On July 30, 1949, Mr. McCarty married the former Lois E. Whitmoyer. Mr. and Mrs. McCarty continued to be active in the business until their retirement on January 1, 1983.
As the business grew and Mr. McCarty began to think of his future plans, it was time to introduce another funeral director. This person had to share the same values and have the same attention to detail as he did. On July 1, 1972, the idea became reality when Richard G. Thomas joined Mr. McCarty as a partner and the current McCarty~Thomas Funeral Home was established.
Mr. Thomas was born November 24, 1936, in Williamsport, a son of George and Reba Marcus Thomas. He was a graduate of Williamsport High School, Class of 1954 and a graduate of the former Eckels College of Mortuary Science, Class of 1962.
Prior to Mr. Thomas joining Mr. McCarty, he was employed with the former Knight Funeral Home, Williamsport.
In 1992 Mr. Thomas’ son, Kenneth G. Thomas, joined his father as a licensed funeral director and successor to the McCarty~Thomas Funeral Home. Ken would continue to work with his father until Mr. Thomas’ retirement in 2007.
In 2002 Michael L. Hacker joined the McCarty~Thomas Funeral Home as an intern. Following his internship, Mike continued to work for the Thomas family as a licensed funeral director until July 1, 2009, when Mike purchased the funeral home.
As a native of Sullivan County, Mike was given the opportunity to expand the McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home in 2014 when he acquired the former McHenry Funeral Home in Dushore. The funeral home was completely remodeled and officially opened in January of 2016.
